This is the updated plastic lower oil sump pan, replacing the original metal design used by VW. The factory metal sump pans were prone to warping over time due to heat cycles and engine movement, which could lead to oil leaks and sealing issues. VW switched to a plastic sump pan to allow for greater flexibility — the plastic construction absorbs engine movement and thermal expansion without warping, providing a more reliable long-term seal.
